What is Microsoft Fabric?
Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced a new platform: Microsoft Fabric. A data analytics platform that brings together several existing solutions. But what exactly is Microsoft Fabric, and what can you do with it? In this blog, we explain.
With Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft has gathered all of its data analytics solutions under one big umbrella. Under this umbrella you will find various Azure and Power BI tools, with the Power BI Service environment as the foundation. This gives you a single environment in which you can extract, transform and visualize your data.
What components does Microsoft Fabric consist of?
As mentioned above, Fabric consists of several solutions. Below, we briefly explain what you can do with each component.
Data Factory
Data Factory is a cloud-based data integration service that lets you collect, transform and load your data. It offers a platform for building and scheduling data pipelines that move and transform data from various sources. With Data Factory, users can create their data pipelines visually, without needing any programming knowledge.
Synapse Data Engineering
Synapse Data Engineering is an advanced data processing service. With this tool you can build, orchestrate and manage large data workloads. It also uses Azure Synapse Analytics to integrate, transform and load data in various formats and at various scales. With Synapse Data Engineering you can automate ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and perform complex data transformations using SQL, Python or Scala.
Synapse Data Warehouse
This powerful data storage and analytics service from Microsoft is specifically designed to handle large volumes of data and complex analytical tasks. It offers a scalable, integrated environment for storing, managing and analyzing structured and unstructured data. With this tool you can integrate data from various sources and query it using standard SQL.
Synapse Data Science
This is a comprehensive data science tool designed to support data scientists in exploring, analyzing and modeling data. It offers an environment in which various users can collaborate, explore data and perform advanced analyses, using popular programming languages such as Python and R. You can also use built-in libraries and tools for machine learning and statistical analysis.

Synapse Real-Time Analytics
This is a powerful analytics service from Microsoft that is specifically designed for real-time data processing and analysis. You can therefore run complex analyses on data as it arrives, giving you immediate insight into changing patterns and trends. The tool also offers the ability to detect anomalies, run predictive analyses and derive real-time insights.
Power BI
Power BI is Microsoft's powerful Business Intelligence tool. With it, you can easily visualize and analyze your data and share the insights you gain. You can collect data from various sources and transform it into interactive dashboards, reports and visualizations, which you can then easily share with your colleagues. You can also explore and discover your data in an intuitive way, using advanced features such as data modeling, data analysis and advanced visualization options.
Data Activator (preview)
Data Activator provides a no-code trigger that connects your data to specific actions in Teams, Outlook and Power Automate. Data Activator is currently still in preview mode, and it is not yet known when it will be added to Microsoft Fabric.
