What is Data Lineage? – Data 101

In our Data 101 series, we dive deeper into essential concepts from the data world. In this edition, we discuss Data Lineage, also known as data provenance.
Data lineage is very important if you want to work in a data-driven way, but many organizations find it difficult to map and manage it properly. In this blog, we explain what data lineage is, why it is so important, and how you can use it effectively within your organization.

TL;DR: Data lineage is the process of mapping the various stages of data, from creation and processing to storage and archiving. It tracks and records the origin, movements, transformations and destinations of data.

What is Data Lineage?

Data Lineage is the process that maps the complete journey of data in your organization, from the source to the final destination or user. It describes how data flows through different systems (the so-called data flow), which transformations the data undergoes (for example splitting, merging or aggregating) and for what purpose.

In other words: Data Lineage gives you insight into the entire process your data goes through in your organization.

Why is Data Lineage important?

Data lineage is essential for any organization that depends on data, because it helps not only with managing and understanding data, but also with improving data quality, optimizing business processes and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Transparency and reliability

Data lineage provides clarity on how your data moves through your organization, which is essential to understand how data is generated, processed and used. This transparency helps you assess the reliability and accuracy of your data.

Compliance and regulation

Because every organization has to comply with regulations (such as the GDPR), it is important to know exactly which personal data you hold, where it is stored and what it is used for. In the event of a data breach, data lineage helps you quickly identify which data has been compromised and who needs to be informed.

Data quality and troubleshooting

Data lineage makes it easy to trace where and how your data has changed within your processes. This is useful for identifying bottlenecks or errors in processing and fixing them. In this way, it contributes to the overall improvement of your data.

Efficiency and cost savings

By gaining insight into your data flows, you can recognize and optimize inefficient processes. Data lineage also helps you identify redundant processes and reports, such as reports that nobody uses anymore or multiple reports containing the same data, allowing you to save costs.

Support for decision-making

Data lineage strengthens the decision-making process by providing more clarity on the data you use. By giving insight into the context, origin, transformations and quality of data, you can make data-driven decisions based on data you trust.

Applying Data Lineage in your organization

Applying data lineage is an important step towards effective data management and a crucial part of data governance. Start by identifying your most important data sources, data flows and processes. Work together with different departments, from IT to end users, to get a complete picture of how data flows through your organization and what it is used for.

Various tools are available that can help you automate and visualize data lineage. Whether you choose an open-source solution or an advanced tool depends on the complexity of your data. You may already have systems that can do this (partly) for you.

Do you use a TimeXtender data warehouse, for example? Then you already have access to automated data lineage to trace the origin, transformations and movements of data. Qlik, with solutions such as Qlik Sense and Qlik Catalog, also offers full insight into the data flow from source to report within the Qlik environment. And the Power BI Service offers a Data Lineage View to visualize relationships between datasets, reports and dashboards, and can be integrated with Microsoft Purview, for example, for more advanced purposes.

Conclusion

Data lineage offers your organization valuable insights, ranging from improved data quality and regulatory compliance to cost savings and more efficient business processes. By mapping the complete data process, you increase the transparency and reliability of your data, which is crucial for data-driven decision-making. With the right tools and approach, data lineage can become an important part of your data governance strategy. This not only helps your organization meet current requirements, but also prepares it well for the future.
