Data Visualization

Data only has value once people can act on it. Good data visualization translates complex figures into a clear message, so your entire organization makes the right decisions. E-mergo helps you present data in a way that turns insights directly into action, built on a reliable data foundation.

Why Data Visualization

Figures don't lie, but figures can unintentionally give a distorted picture, simply based on what you do and don't show. And where one employee effortlessly keeps track of an Excel list, another drops off. In a truly data-driven organization, everyone has access to the relevant data and everyone is able to base decisions on it. Good visualization makes that difference:

  • From complex data to a clear message that both sender and receiver understand.
  • Faster action, because people respond to clear insights instead of raw figures.
  • Everyone works from the same source data toward the same goal.
  • Less scattered information handoff, because process steps connect better to each other.
  • Sharper choices: a visualization standard forces you to think about what really matters.

Our approach

A good visualization doesn't come from "making a dashboard pretty," but from deliberate choices about what you show and for whom. For that, we use our own E-mergo framework for dashboard design.

We start with the user. Who is the dashboard for, and which decision does that person need to be able to make? From that question, we determine what really matters.

We structure according to the DAR principle. Our E-mergo framework organizes every dashboard into three layers: Dashboard, Analysis, and Reporting. The Dashboard page shows the key KPIs at a glance, so you can steer directly on the current state of affairs. The Analysis page shows what's behind those figures, with comparisons, correlations, and outliers. The Reporting page goes into depth down to line-item level, with all measures, dimensions, and filters to zoom in. An additional information page documents KPI definitions, frequently asked questions, and contact details.

We choose the right visualization. We select forms that convey the message clearly and prevent figures from giving a distorted picture, with an eye for UX, UI, and a consistent data style guide.

We tell the story behind the data. With data storytelling, we present insights in a logical order, so the receiver sees what's going on and understands what to do.

We're happy to transfer the knowledge behind this framework, so your team can create strong, consistent visualizations on its own.

Deepen your data visualization skills and strengthen your team

Want to embed those skills across your whole team? In our Dashboard Design training, you get hands-on with our E-mergo framework and the DAR principle, and apply the key principles of data visualization, UX, UI, and data storytelling. You'll learn to think from the user's question, recognize poor visualizations, and make the right dashboard choices, for a dashboard that actually tells a clear story.

FAQ

  • What is data visualization?

Data visualization is presenting data, for example in charts and dashboards, in a way that makes the message behind it immediately clear. The goal isn't to "make data pretty," but to help people make the right decisions faster.

  • Why is good data visualization important?

Because most people act faster on a clear message than on a complex set of figures. Good visualization ensures everyone in your organization understands the same data and works from the same source toward the same goal.

  • What is the DAR principle?

DAR stands for Dashboard, Analysis, and Reporting, and is the core of our E-mergo framework. You start with an overview of the key KPIs on the dashboard. The analysis page then breaks down the figures behind a KPI, and the reporting page offers detail down to line-item level. That way every user keeps an overview and can go deeper if they want.

  • Can visualization misrepresent data?

Yes. By determining what you do and don't show, you can unintentionally give a distorted picture. A well-thought-out visualization standard helps prevent that and forces sharp, well-founded choices.

  • Which tools do you use for visualization?

We work with Qlik and Power BI, among others. Which tool fits best depends on your environment, your data sources, and your wishes. We're happy to advise you on that.

  • Do you help our team make better dashboards themselves?

Yes. Besides building dashboards, we transfer knowledge through our Dashboard Design training, where you learn to work with our E-mergo framework, the DAR principle, and the principles of data visualization, UX, UI, and data storytelling. That way your team makes clear and consistent dashboards on its own.
